China the new threat in the nuclear world: US military official
After decades of topping the list of US nuclear threats, Russia is on verge of being dethroned by China.
According to US military official Lieutenant General Thomas Bussiere, “There’s going to be a point, a crossover point, where the number of threats presented by China will exceed the number of threats that currently Russia presents.”
In the past few years, China emerged as a potential threat for the world in nuclear chronology. This kept the US govt in a dilemma.
While talking to an online forum Bussiere expressed his fear on this topic. He said unlike Russia, the United States did not have any treaties or dialogue mechanism with China on the issue to “alleviate any misperceptions or confusion.”
He also added the determination would not be based solely on the number of Beijing’s stockpiled nuclear warheads, but also on how they are “operationally fielded.”
Before him, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken too expressed deep concern about China’s growing nuclear arsenal during a meeting with foreign ministers of Asian countries and partner nations in early August. After this concern was raised by two of the high military officials it seems like this situation, is not as simple as China portrays or we believe.
