Aisa Khel ‘Dhayn’ khel gaya, Dhyan me sabke ‘Dhyan’ reh gaya : National Sports Day August 29
The day is celebrated to honor the legendary hockey player, Major Dhyan Chand Singh. 29th August happens to be the birth anniversary of Dhyan Chand, who made India proud by his extraordinary sporting skills. He was the greatest hockey player India has ever seen.
Major Dhyan Chand had scored more than 400 international goals in his career from 1926 to 1948 while scoring nearly 1,000 goals in his entire career.
So to give real tribute to such a legendary player; the Government of India has decided to celebrate his birthday as the National Sports Day since 2012.
This day is celebrated by organizing friendly matches between different Indian hockey teams at the Dhyan Chand National stadium in New Delhi which was constructed in the respect and honor of Major Dhyan Chand.
The Prime Minister of India Mr. Narendra Modi launched the “Fit India Movement” from Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, New Delhi at 10 A.M. on 29th August last year. From the dais he encouraged the citizens to adopt to fit and healthy lifestyles, the inaugural program was also broadcasted live on Doordarshan.
Dhyan Chand Award is the highest award for Lifetime Achievement in sports in India. This award is presented on a yearly basis to the persons from the sports field that have not only contributed by the means of their performances but also strived for the upliftment of the sports after they get retired. Many sports events take place all over the country. Several sports personalities were conferred with awards on National Sports Day. The awards that include – Khel Ratna, Arjun Award, Dronacharya Award, Dhyan Chand Award, and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award were given by the President of India.
Major Dhyan Chand was such a great player of hockey that if the ball once stuck in his stick, then it used to remove only after scoring the goal. This was the reason that once his stick was broken during a match to check whether stick has any magnet or something else inside it or not.
To conclude with, Sports is a very important activity for Students. It’s one activity which can help us to develop multiple qualities like sense of togetherness, leadership skills, stamina, physical strength, planning and strategy, patriotism and team work. The qualities which helps us to excel in life. National Sports day is not only a tribute to one of greatest in the game, it also reminds us the importance of sports in our Life. The main aim of National Sports Day is to raise awareness about the importance of sports and drive home the attention of people to comprehend its advantages on the human body.
